New Sightings & Latest Wildlife India News of 2025

In a rare sighting, Black panthers were spotted in Manas National Park in Assam recently.

With results being visible in the conservation of Gangetic River Dolphin, now after a Gap of 25 years Gangetic River Dolphin has been sighted in Assam’s Charikadia river in Lakhimpur District.

Madhav National Park has been declared as 58th Tiger Reserve of India and Ninth Tiger Reserve of Madhya Pradesh. With a total area of 1651 sq. km consisting of 375 sq.kms of Core and 1275 sq. kms of Buffer, this tiger reserve will act as corridor between Panna Tiger Reserve in East and Ranthambore Tiger Reserve in West.

Two rare plant species have been discovered in the state of Sikkim. One of them has never been seen before in India, and the other has been recorded in the state for the very first time. These findings highlight Sikkim’s rich biodiversity and the importance of studying and protecting its forests.

Good news for Nature lovers Quite recently in Feb 2025 Karnataka Government has declared Hesaraghatta Grasslands on the outskirts of Bengaluru as “Greater Hesaraghatta Grassland Conservation Reserve” The Grassland and its adjoining areas are home to smooth-coated otters, 13 species of amphibians, 111 species of butterflies (included Lilac Silverline which is sighted only here) and 395 insect species.

70 special orchids have been documented in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve during a recent rapid survey conducted for its systematic documentation.

Gujarat has seen a rise in the population of Asiatic lions that has increased to 891 now from 674 in June 2020. The 16th Asiatic lion census, a four-day exercise, was conducted from May 10 to 13 in two phases, covering an area of 35,000 square kilometres across 11 districts

A lone Indian grey wolf was recently spotted along the Yamuna floodplains near Palla, where the river enters Delhi, in a rare wildlife sighting in the city’s northern fringes.

A Royal Bengal Tiger, an elusive species for the western state of Gujarat, was spotted in the Ratanmahal Sanctuary in Dahod district Thursday, the first sighting in six years. This makes Gujarat currently the only state, albeit temporarily, to host the three big cats at the same time—the Asiatic lion, the Indian leopard, and the Bengal tiger.

The latest to join the list of Ramsar sites in India are:
– Khichan, in Phalodi, Rajasthan
– Menar in Udaipur, Rajasthan
– This addition takes our tally to 91.

Eurasian Otter, thought to be lost since last 25-30 years from the lakes and rivers of Kashmir, has been sighted once again in Kashmir. This year, the otter has been seen three times. In May, one appeared in Gurez Valley. Later, another was spotted in Heerpora, Shopian district. Now, with the recent sighting in Lidder, hope grows for their return.

Manas National Park has added another cat species in its long list. Rare and elusive Asiatic Golden Cat has been rediscovered in Manas National Park recently.

A New Jewel in the Crown:  *Euthalia malaccana, a rare butterfly, has been officially recorded for the first time in India at Lai Ho, Leparada in Arunachal Pradesh. This remarkable discovery has been made by two young Lepidopterists.

Siamese Fireback, Thailand’s national bird Siamese Fireback, Thailand’s national bird, known for its vivid look. Its metallic feathers shimmer in the sunlight. With a grey body and bright red beak, it moves gracefully. The bird is usually found in the forests of Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. This shy but beautiful bird has been spotted for the first time in forests of Ranikhet, Uttarakhand India.

Asiatic Golden Cat has been rediscovered in Manas National Park

Two rare snake species discovered in Dudhwa National Park. One, Painted Keelback seen in U.P after 117 years. Second, Brown Vine Snake which has never been seen earlier.

A new species of orchid, named Crepidium assamicum, has been discovered in Assam’s Dibru-Saikhowa National Park, adding a new chapter to the global biodiversity of orchids.

Kaziranga- 18 new Butterfly species discovered in Kaziranga bringing the total to 446. Kaziranga now stands second in Butterfly species after Namdapha.

In the Eastern Ghats scientists have discovered a new species of Flowering plant. It has been named after Andhra Pradesh, state where it has been found for the first time.

Three new Fish species have been discovered by our scientists in Eastern Ghats and in Western Ghats.

Assam’s Raimona National Park (RNP) has recorded the first photographic evidence of a Chinese pangolin.

Madhav National Park in Madhya Pradesh’s Shivpuri district set to become as the state’s eighth tiger reserve.

In the Western Ghats researchers have discovered a new species of Damselfly. It has been named “Agasthyamalai Bambootail”.

A new species of Orchid has been discovered in the beautiful and untouched habitat of Arunachal Pradesh. It has been named after the district where it was discovered.

56th Tiger Reserve of India declared in the State of Chhattisgarh. Guru Ghasidas National Park & Tamor Pingla Wildlife Sanctuary with combined area of 2829.38 sq.km has been notified as Tiger Reserve. With Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in West and Palamau Tiger Reserve in East, this will help in movement of wildlife from one reserve to another.

With very strong conservation efforts by the National and State organizations, many areas are discovering return of wildlife which were not seen there since last couple of decades. In Chhatisgarh, Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary has a young tiger as its guest. This sanctuary had no record of tiger sighting since last 4 decades.

Two new spider species have been discovered in the Western Ghats, a very important biodiversity hotspots. Last one of this particular species was seen around 118 years ago.

Talking about nature’s resilience, Gangetic dolphins have made a comeback after a gap of nearly 30 years in river Ganges in a stretch of around 100 kms in and around Patna.

Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary near Bhopal has been notified as a Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh.

It is for first time a tiger has been spotted in the Sonia Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam.

With the advent of winters a host of exciting news is coming for Birders from different parts of India. A flock of Rare Little Bunting was sighted in Mount Abu area of Rajasthan. This bird has never been seen in this part of India.

Rare Marbled Duck has been spotted at Sultanpur National Park in NCR region making it a confirmed sighting since 1990.

The researchers have discovered a new species of wasp in four different parts of the country, including the BRT Tiger Reserve. They have found the new species of wasp in the Kalakkad in Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu, the Siang Valley of Arunachal Pradesh and Tehri in Uttarakhand.

A Wroughton’s free-tailed bat (Otomops wroughtoni) has been sighted at north Delhi’s Yamuna Biodiversity Park recently. As per experts this is first record not just for Delhi-NCR but entire Northern India.

Under Project Dolphin in India, scientists have satellite tagged a male Ganga River Dolphin and released in river Brahmaputra. This will help in understanding the seasonal and migratory patterns, range, distribution, and habitat utilization of this endangered species in India and also help in taking steps for their conservation.

King Cobra: Due to recent reclassification on account of a extensive study of around 20 years done by a eminent scientist, we now have 4 different species of the world’s longest venomous snake. The newly discovered species include the Northern King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), which spreads across northern India, Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet, China, and parts of Southeast Asia. The Sunda King Cobra, which is distributed in southern Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and the southern Philippine Islands. The Western Ghats King Cobra, which is exclusive to the Indian rainforests and hill country of the Western Ghats region. Finally, the Luzon King Cobra (Ophiophagus salvatana), from Luzon Island in northern Philippines.

Pangolin: Quite recently in March 2024 scientists from ZSI discovered a new species of Pangolin in Arunachal Pradesh which is quite different from Chinese and Indian Pangolins. They have aptly named it as Indo-Burmese Pangolin based on its potential geographical distribution.

Sikkim’s Khecheopalri Lake in Gyalshing district has been officially designated as a ‘Ramsar Wetland of International Importance’ Four new Ramsar sites in India have been declared, increasing the total to 89.

The newly designated Ramsar sites include Sakkarakottai Bird Sanctuary and Therthangal Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu, Khecheopalri Wetland in Sikkim, and Udhwa Lake in Jharkhand. This marks a significant milestone for Sikkim and Jharkhand, as they have secured their first ever Ramsar sites.

Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve is preparing to receive 25 swamp deer (Barahsingha) from Kanha Tiger Reserve soon. Once the new arrivals reach Bandhavgarh, the total population of swamp deer in the reserve will increase to 75. The reserve currently houses about 56 swamp deer within its enclosure. Of these, 48 were relocated from Kanha in two phases, while the remaining eight were born inside the enclosure. Once the 25 new swamp deer arrive, the population inside the enclosure will rise to 75, and approximately 50 of them will eventually be released into the open range. Currently, there are no swamp deer living in the wild in Bandhavgarh.

A Fish species believed to be extinct since last eight decades have been rediscovered by Researchers in 2024 in the Himalayan region of India. The Chel snakehead (Channa amphibeus), a rare freshwater predator last seen and documented between 1918 and 1933 has been seen and photographed in Chel river where it was last seen almost a century ago.

Project Dolphin: In a World’s largest fresh water surveys, covering entire range of Gangetic River Dolphin in Ganga and Brahmaputra and areas of Beas River Dolphin, the dolphin population was monitored between 2021 to 2023. The estimate on Gangetic River Dolphin is 6,327 and Indus Dolphin around 3. It shows that Dolphins are thriving in areas where minimal human presence is felt. The survey included areas in 8 states and covered around 8,000 kms.
